Flores, Indonesia

1 min read

How late did primitive man survive?

On the island of Flores, in Indonesia, a new human species, Homo florensis, has been discovered.

Homo florensis lived on the Indonesian island of Flores until at least 10,000 BC. However despite this late date, H. florensis shows morphological characteristics typical of Homo Erectus, the hominids who roamed the earth four million years ago, before the emergence of Homo Sapiens.

At only three feet high, and with a brain the size of a grapefruit, how do we explain the presence of this mutant hominid?

The story of Flores man is the leading item in the News section of Current World Archaeology.
