Send us your best heritage photos for a chance to win!

As summer comes to an end, this is the perfect time to reflect on memories of your heritage-filled travels or visits to historical sites. Photography offers a wonderful way to capture and experience the sights and splendours of archaeology around the world. Whether you’ve been looking back at photos from previous holidays, venturing out to sites near you or on trips further afield, or busy working on archaeological projects, we want to see your best photos on a heritage theme. These can be photos that you have taken recently, or at any point in the past. Send them to us for your chance to win first prize in our annual CWA Photo Competition and have your work showcased in the magazine.

The winning image and three runners-up will be featured in CWA and at the CA Live! 2024 conference in London on 24 February. The overall winner will get two free tickets to the conference, and will receive a Current World Archaeology trophy.

Images must be high resolution

Please use the highest resolution you have, and include details of the site or artefact photographed, as well as when each image was taken, and your contact information including a postal address.

The judges’ decision is final, and prize-winners (only) will be notified of results by 12 February 2024

RULES

Entrants can submit up to 5 images with an archaeological theme – please include details of the site or artefact photographed, when each image was taken, and your contact information, including a postal address.

Photos of any world location may be submitted.

Please use the highest resolution you have.

Copyright will remain with the photographer. However, by entering this competition you agree to Current Publishing using the images for possible exhibition, publication or promotional use.

It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary permissions are obtained from any person featured in a photograph. Photographers flying drones should obtain required permissions from any site pictured.

All photos entered must be done so under an individual’s name. By submitting images you confirm that you are the copyright holder and creator of the image, and that you will be responsible for any claims by any third party.

Entrants must be 18 or over. The competition is open to all amateur and professional photographers. Amateur and professional entries will not be judged separately.

The winners will be featured in the magazine and at the CA Live! 2024 conference, and the overall winner will receive two free tickets to the conference and a CWA trophy.

  1. Hi! I would like to participate and would like to know if the 5 images must all belong to one subject or can belong to multiple sites, objects, etc. thank you

    • Hello! The images can absolutely depict multiple different sites/ objects etc., that’s not a problem, just be sure to include information about what is being shown in each picture in your email. Thank you!

    • Hello! As long as the relevant descriptions/ contact information etc. is included somewhere, you can send them all in the same email or in five separate emails, whichever is easier for you. Thanks!

  3. Hello, I want to participate in this competition. In my pictures there are few tourists whose faces is not visible. Are these kinds of photos valid for entry as it is not possible to get rid of general public from the site.

    • Hello, as long as the photos are of sufficiently high resolution, there are no restrictions surrounding how the pictures were taken. Thanks!

  4. Hello, I want to participate in the competition 2024, so how can I send the picture, including the location and time, meaning where to write this information below in the image or add a word file.

    • Hello, to enter the competition please send your photos via email to [email protected]. Information about the photos, as well as your contact details, should be included in the body of the email, and if you would like to include details of the subject of each picture in the image file names that would also be helpful.
